MOUNT TRASHMORE PARK

Mount Trashmore Park is a city park located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Before the park came to be, the area used to hold over 640,000 tons of waste and was Virginia Beach’s main landfill. Many have joked and nicknamed the waste center, mount rushmore as it was the tallest peak in Virginia Beach with a height of 60 feet tall. Since the city sits over a water table, the city was unable to discard the waste by burying it to the ground. instead of discarding and sending the waste elsewhere, the city proposed to turn the area into the country’s first landfill into a recreational park in which Mount Trashmore Park was born in 1973.
